Workshop for students and professionals in the performing arts led by Peter Rose

Awakening Practice is a 3-day workshop offered by Practical Works.
The intensive 20 hours body-voice work led by Peter Rose serves as a deep, “awakening”, full-immersion search into one’s creative potential, and is founded on the theories and exercises that the Polish theatre director Jerzy Grotowski developed to train the actors of his Teatr Laboratorium.

The Work

Barefoot. On the back.
Rhythm and circulation of breath. Emptying the cackling head in the body. Engaged relaxation, meeting the floor, eyes open, waking in time and over time, seeing the work space, seeing the others. The dynamic of give and take begins. The body meets itself by establishing its presence in the workspace and in direct contact with others.
An energy is generated through dynamic movement of the body, natural breathing, moving out, knowing the floor, exploring the room and everything in it. Much is possible in this energized state. Doing and reacting. To prance, gallop, take flight. The energy is a springboard in search of that which is personal or private while maintaining contact through give and take, present and conscious. The associations flow when you are engaged with commitment, working with your whole self.

Practice and Thematic

  • Creating Working Conditions – Physical and Vocal Training
  • “Give and Take”- The Partner – Work on Texts and Songs
  • Engaged with Conviction – Toward Performance

The physical and vocal training is grounded in Stanislawski’s perception of the organic basis of all physical actions and Grotowski’s practice of unblocking the body resonators on the way to finding one’s voice.

Goals for the Actor/Performer

From Toward a Poor Theatre by Jerzy Grotowski

  • To stimulate a process of self-revelation, going back as far as the subconscious, yet canalizing this stimulus in order to obtain the required reaction.
  • To be able to articulate this process, discipline it and convert it into signs.  In concrete terms, this means to construct a score whose notes are tiny elements of contact, reactions to the stimuli of the outside world: what we call "give and take."
  • To eliminate from the creative process the resistances and obstacles caused by one's own organism, both physical and psychic (the two forming a whole).

All participants need to prepare a short text and a song for work.
Participants need to bring work clothes, water and a towel. Work clothes are loose fitting but sturdy.

A theatre or dance background is not required to do the work. The workshop is meant for everyone who wants to develop his/her creativity. For example, it might be interesting for teachers, managers, therapists, social workers.

Itinerant Workshop

Awakening Practice is also an itinerant project. On request, it can be hosted by other schools, institutions, private groups, in or outside of Berlin, who want to integrate the workshop into their annual programme, or wish to offer their students/members the chance to experience the  Grotowski method based training.

Fee for Itinerant Workshop

The fee for participants is decided by the centre that is hosting the workshop. Peter Rose Practical Works will receive a honorarium, plus the refunding of travel expenses.
